Rugged GPS Time & Frequency Reference – VITA 75

Precision time synchronisation is now proving essential to the implementation of many different types of modern electronic systems. As the exclusive UK distribution partner for Spectracom, Steatite can provide its customers with access to the latest innovative technology in this sector. VersaSync is a high performance GPS master clock and network time server that is capable of delivering accurate, software-configurable time and frequency signals under all circumstances, even in GNSS-denied scenarios. Supporting both precision time protocol (PTP) and network time protocol (NTP) synchronisation standards, this robust, military grade unit (MIL-STD-810G) can deal with the most uncompromising of operational environments. Thanks to its lightweight construction (0.91kg) the solution is highly portable, while a compact form factor (147.3mm x 127.5mm x 63.0mm) and VITA 75 compliant design both facilitate its integration with existing hardware. The unit’s I/Os can be configured to accommodate a variety of timecode formats, such as IRIG, HaveQuick, 1PPS, xPPS, etc. A diverse choice of GNSS receivers is also offered.

Each VersaSync unit has a built-in high stability oscillator/clock resource (either OCXO or CSAC based, depending on the degree of exactitude required) that enables time and frequency accuracy to be upheld for extended periods without GPS/GNSS support. Furthermore, it can be re-synchronised by an external reference if required. There are a wide array of different applications for which this timing solution is highly suited. These include large scale UAVs, military vehicles, radar equipment (civil or military) and marine (sonar systems), among others. The VersaSync units have an operational temperature range that covers -45°C to +85°C. They can also cope with 95% humidity levels and have strong resilience to shock (20g) and vibration (7.7g). Functioning at altitudes up to 13,000m, they are highly suited to airborne deployment.

Rugged personal tracking system incorporates array of security-critical features

High integrity electronic monitoring solution delivers industry-leading diagnostic functionality

Drawing on its expertise in producing advanced, resilient engineering solutions to deal with exacting application demands, Steatite now introduces a comprehensive, high integrity tracking system. It presents the national security, border control and law enforcement sectors with an ultra-reliable, all-encompassing, end-to-end solution that is simple to implement and can be tailored to fit their specific operational requirements. What essentially differentiates it from alternative solutions is that it has been designed from the initial concept phase with the goal of providing irrefutable forensic evidence – through its sophisticated diagnostic resources, precision positioning and secure operational capabilities.

The worn unit comprises a secure GPS tag with a robust ankle strap. A wide range of sensors are incorporated, which constantly acquire numerous forms of data concerning the wearer’s locality and the external environmental, as well as other key parameters such as battery status, etc. Extremely sensitive, adjustable tamper alert mechanisms have been integrated, which are triggered if any attempt is made to break into the case or to cut the strap.

The unit connects securely to a configurable web portal, which can be referred to in real time. This relies on geolocation data from multiple satellites and base stations, as well as access to state-of-the-art mapping sources, to determine the tag wearer’s exact position with very low possibility of error. Geofence notifications can be utilised to prevent the tagged subject from leaving (or entering) predetermined areas. Data being transferred between the tag and the web portal is encrypted to safeguard against the risk of security breaches. Also data segregation means that confidentially is always maintained, as not all the information is held in one place and will only be brought together if required for judicial purposes. The graphic user interface (GUI) has been developed to make it as operator-friendly as possible. Data recording and reporting rates can be set to suit specific requirements, with multiple monitoring modes available. Steatite can work directly with the customer to ensure the effectiveness of operational processes and thereby mitigate the chances of false alerts occurring (something that can prove a major problem with other solutions).

Through its elevated power efficiency, the tag unit has a long battery life (running for up to three days between charges). Furthermore, it has a rapid charge period (taking just one hour to fully replenish its reserves). Untethered charging means that it does not have to be connected directly to the mains (thus making it more convenient for the wearer). Its sturdy construction can cope with heavy shocks, vibrations and other forms of mechanical stress, as well as wide temperature fluctuations. As the casing is waterproof, this unit is not affected by exposure to water (from heavy rainfall, showering and even swimming).

“This personal tracking system showcases Steatite’s adept engineering, plus our in-depth knowledge of cloud computing technology and our understanding of the importance of data protection in relation to this. Every element, from the tag unit’s electronic hardware, firmware and mechanical structure, right through to its supporting software ecosystem, has been developed in such a way that it is fundamentally able to stand up to intense legal scrutiny, thereby providing the highest degree of evidential assurance,” states Chris Oxlade-Arnott, General Manager at Steatite EMS.

What is the best choice of rechargeable for compact, rugged applications?

As modern technology becomes ever smaller and more portable, the ability to produce rugged, go-anywhere devices (e.g. rugged laptop) that can perform tasks for a day or more without recharging is a key competitive advantage for manufacturers. While there is merit in selecting components and power management systems to stretch available power as far as possible, the most fundamental part of the system remains the battery.

Battery technology has continually evolved and different chemistries have come and gone, yet commercially available Li-ion batteries have been around for a quarter of a century and, during that time, have supplanted other battery technologies in many applications.

Li-ion technology holds charge for long periods of time and can cope with protracted recharge intervals, as well as not suffering from the ‘memory effect’ that stifled Ni-MH batteries. The key quality that makes Li-ion the battery of choice is the high energy density levels that are inherent in the technology – in the region of 260Whrs/kg. Simply put, this is the amount of useful energy that can be stored per unit weight and is a key measure for any battery being considered for a portable application.

As a result of its high energy density, Li-ion technology proves considerably lighter and less bulky than other rechargeable technologies of equivalent capacity, thereby giving design engineers greater scope for designing market-leading products.

Li-ion batteries exhibit a high degree of robustness and they support a broad operational temperature range. In addition, they possess strong resilience to mechanical stresses caused by pressure, shock and vibration. Also, as the batteries are sealed, they can be used in any orientation without the possibility of accidental leaks that could be expected from ‘wet’ technologies, such as lead-acid.

Combining all of these benefits including the high energy density, the robustness and ability to work safely in any orientation makes Li-ion batteries the primary choice for compact and rugged applications.

Having served this sector for many years, Steatite is considered a trusted partner in the design and implementation of advanced Li-ion battery systems. A key focus has been to develop best practices, heavily invest in comprehensive and rigorous test procedures and remain abreast of the legislation. As a result, Steatite’s customers achieve the required performance while having complete confidence in the reliability, operational safety and legislative compliance of the battery.

finalised contract terms with the Ministry of Justice (MoJ) to supply monitoring hardware for GPS offender tagging.

The contract for the supply of monitoring hardware is expected to havea value of approximately £34 million  over the three year minimum contract period.

It is anticipated that Steatite will be supplying initial products to the MoJ by the calendar year end. Quantities to be delivered are then expected to progressively increase over the contract term.

The contract is not expected to have a significant impact in the current financial year as most deliveries are expected to take place in financial years ending 31 March 2016 and 2017.The final deliveries will fall in the first half of financial year ending 31 March 2018 that the  gross margins  on the contract will be in line with the gross margins normally achieved by Steatite on its larger contracts.

Commenting on the contract award, Gary Marsh, Chief Executive of Solid State, said:

“This is a landmark contract for the Group and our largest to date. It marks the culmination of three years development work by Steatite and suitably illustrates the scale and complexity of the contracts that we are increasingly tendering for.  I would like to congratulate John Lavery and his team for securing this high profile contract.”
