The CF-U1 is the ideal portable solution for use in harsh environments. Based on the latest Intel Atom Z520 processor, the CF-U1 runs at 1.33GHz and features 512KB of Level 2 cache. Featuring Intel Hyper Threading Technology the CF-U1 is a multi-tasking UMPC capable of processing two simultaneous threads for improved system performance.

The CF-U1 ultra mobile handheld PC comes with a fan-less all weather design, along with twin hot-swappable batteries that make it possible to replace a battery without shutting down the machine. Moreover, its whole body is protected by magnesium-alloy chassis, thus keeping the data and hardware safe from accidental drops and bumps.

The CF-U1 is a fully rugged device capable of withstanding shocks, vibration, humidity,altitude, temperature extremes and thermal shock while also being fully rain and dust resistant.

Sunlight Readable Display

The CF-U1 features a high contrast sunlight readable 5.6in TFT screen capable supporting a native resolution of 1024 x 600 making it an ideal choice for viewing web pages and office documents. Performance in direct sunlight is of a consistently very high quality, offering excellent clarity and presentation from all angles and in all levels of light. The LCD panel features anti-reflective screen treatment and white-LED backlighting.

The CF-U1 features a unique zoom facility, activated by means of a magnification ‘rocker switch’ to the left of the display.This switch allows the user to zoom in and out whilst viewing documents. Above the zoom switch is a convenient scroll rocker switch. This facility allows the user to scroll up and down through any document displayed on the screen. When combined, these features offer the user an impressive degree of flexibility and control when manipulating documents.

The display on the CF-U1 is a resistive touch-screen, allowing the user the ability to tap and drag icons using the supplied stylus. If required, the touch-screen display can be manipulated by the user using just a finger if preferred.

Key Design Features

To ensure that the CF-U1 is capable of operating in all conditions, all ports on the product are hidden behind sliding doors which snap shut with a waterproof seal. Each sliding door is secured with a locking mechanism to ensure that none of these flaps open accidentally when you least want them to.

On the right of the CF-U1 are two flaps - one to house an SD card slot, while the other protects the headphone and microphone sockets. Also on the right of the UMPC is the stylus, although this can be stowed on either side depending on personal preference.

Along the top edge is a flap which conceals a USB 2.0 port and an integrated bar code scanner is housed behind a Perspex cover. This addition makes the CF-U1 ideal for asset management and stock control applications. A flap on the left hand side of the CF-U1 protects the power socket.

At the rear of the CF-U1 is a fingerprint scanner for biometric security, along with an integrated camera. The inclusion of a camera makes the CF-U1 an ideal product for use by users who may be involved in assessing damage or monitoring the progress of a project.

A detachable leather hand strap is supplied with the unit to ensure secure handling while tapping at the screen.

Hot Swappable Battery

As standard, the CF-U1 features dual two cell batteries offering a battery life of up to twelve hours. The inclusion of a second battery means that one of the batteries can be replaced without the need to power down the system or interrupt use.

Ease of use

The CF-U1 is equipped with an array of ergonomic visual indicators to provide feedback to the user on all aspects of product operation.

The right hand side of the CF-U1 features a power light, a hard disk light and battery light indicator for the battery installed in bay 2. There are also four programmable hotkeys which can be assigned to different applications using the supplied software.

To the right of the display are indicators to show when the 802.11 a/b/g/n wireless and Bluetooth modules are enabled, along with a battery indicator light for the battery installed in bay 1.

Below the screen is a full alphanumeric keypad. The QWERTY keyboard has been split in half to allow the user to easily reach each all of the buttons using their thumbs.

Panasonic's decision to place the keys below the screen has allowed for the inclusion of numbers, symbols and even cursor keys. The keyboard is fully backlit for ease of use.

Connectivity

The device supports Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, next generation (SiRFstarIII based) GPS technology, and 3G mobile broadband Internet connectivity.

As standard the CF-U1 is supplied with an Intel Wireless WiFi Link 5100 adapter that supports 802.11a, b, g and Draft-N. It also supports Bluetooth 2.0 + EDR allowing the user the ability to transfer files to and from suitably equipped devices. An optional integrated HSDPA (factory option) can be installed as can an optional RFID reader.
